A charming country inn, nestling in the picturesque Northumbrian village of Eglingham, the Tankerville Arms offers traditional hospitality. It is popular with locals and tourists alike, and serves mouthwatering British food with an occasional international flourish. The three bedrooms are sumptuously furnished, and feature television with Freesat, tea and coffee facilities and complimentary WiFi access.

The inn's location, 8 miles NW of Alnwick, is handy for ramblers who can explore the nearby Cheviot Hills, for fisherman who might test their luck on the River Tweed and its many tributaries, and for tourists who may visit a host of attractions Alnwick Castle and Gardens, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Chillingham Castle and its famous herd of wild cattle, and the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall.

Access and Cancellations


The Tankerville Arms aims to cater for the needs of all its guests. The bar and restaurant are on the ground floor, with three bedrooms on the first floor. There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor, but the guest bedrooms are unsuitable for wheelchair access.


There is a bus service running between Wooler and Alnwick, and the bus stop is 100 metres from the Inn. The service is number 470, and there are four return trips daily. The nearest railway station is at Alnmouth, some 15km away, where the East Coast line connects London with Edinburgh and beyond. There is also an accessible taxi service available, which should be reserved in advance.

Arrival and Car Parking

There is on- and off-street car parking immediately in front of the Inn, and assistance with luggage and entry is available at reception. The car park surface is gravel, and slopes slightly. Vehicles can reverse to the entrance, which has a low step (8cm) with a portable ramp. The entrance is less than 2 metres from the nearest car parking spot, and access is through two doorways, with a minimum width of 82cm.

Main Entrance, Reception and WC

The doorway leads to the level bar and restaurant areas, although a portion of the restaurant is raised, with two stairs of 12cm and 18cm. The toilets are also on the same level, and there is a separate unisex disabled WC (46cm high, with support rail) and basin (69cm high with lever-operated taps). The ladies toilets feature two cubicles, whilst the gents has one cubicle and three urinals. All three toilet areas are floored in tile only.
Staff are on duty throughout the day, and there is a bell for attention. The minimum door-width throughout is 72cm.

Bar and Restaurant

Tables and seating in the bar and restaurant are in the main moveable, with bench seats and chairs with and without arms. Lighting is varied, with brighter and softer areas, and some tables with natural light. The flooring varies from carpet and wood to tiling and stone flags. Staff will be happy to assist if menu reading is difficult, and food is served to each table. Most dietary requirements can be accommodated.


Access to the bedrooms is through a door (73cm) and up 14 stairs (each approximately 16cm high) with a single handrail.

The French bedroom measures 3.9m by 3.8m, with a single step down of 9cm. The bed is 62cm high, 2m long and 1.5m wide The private bathroom (2.3m by 1.9m) is adjacent, featuring a WC (40cm high), a washbasin (86cm) and a bath/shower, the edge of which is 52cm high.

The Gold room is 3.9m by 3.8m, is level throughout and has an en-suite bathroom. The bed is 62cm high, 2m long and 2m wide. The bathroom measures 2.4m by 1.8m, with a WC (40cm high), washbasin (86cm high) and a bath/shower whose edge is 52cm in height.

The Suite is a large, luxurious room (4.8m by 6.3m), all on one level. The bed measures 62cm high, 2m long and 2m wide. The en-suite shower room is down three steps (17cm, 15cm, 15cm) and is 2.5m by 1.7m.

The WC is 42cm high, the basin 83cm high, and the walk-in shower is 1.4m deep and 90cm wide, with a ‘dinner plate’ rose.
All the bedrooms offer Freesat with teletext, bright lighting, and tea/coffee making facilities.

Additional Information

Dogs are allowed in the bedrooms and beer garden, and guide dogs may accompany their owners in the bar and restaurant areas. The Inn is completely non-smoking throughout, save for outside areas; a covered external area is provided for smokers. The beer garden is easily accessible, with a single 12cm step to negotiate.
Refrigeration is available for medication or dietary foods.

Cancellation Policy

Check-in is from 12 noon, and cancellations within 48hrs of arrival will incur a full payment. For cancellations in advance of 48hrs of arrival, the deposit will be retained if the rooms are not re-let.
